You Don't Care About Us
(Without You I'm Nothing)
Lyrics and explanation

You Don't Care About Us 1 - Placebo You Don't Care About Us 2 - Placebo

Lyrics : Placebo
You Don't Care About Us
If it's a bad day,
You try to suffocate
Another memory, scarred.
If it's a bad case,
Then you accelerate,
you're in the getaway car.

You don't care about us oh oh
You don't care about us oh oh
You don't care about us oh oh
You don't care about us.

If it's a bad case,
You're on the rampage.
Another memory, scarred.
You're at the wrong place,
You're on the back page,
You're in the getaway car.

You don't care about us oh oh
You don't care about us oh oh
You don't care about us oh oh
You don't care about us.

It's your age, It's my rage
It's your age, It's my rage
It's your age, It's my rage

You're too complicated,
We should separate it.
You're just confiscating,
You're exasperating.
This degeneration,
Mental masturbation.
Think I'll leave it all behind
Save this bleeding heart of mine

It's a matter of trust
It's a matter of trust
It's a matter of trust
It's a matter of trust
Because

You don't care about us
You don't care about us
You don't care about us
You don't care about us

It's your age, It's my rage
It's your age, It's my rage
Press Quotes
"Brian : It's the poppiest that we've ever been in our lives, it's sort of... it's got a really cheerful melody but it's quite a disturbing song.

SS : Disturbing in what way?

Brian : Well it's kind of... it's sort of somebody ranting at me basically, it's sort of like an ex kind of telling me I'm crap at relationships really which is what all the mental masturbation's about in that song. But it has a total, total pop edge to it, it's kind of got that punk pop thing that 'Nancy Boy' had."

Brian Molko, In conversation with Sally Stratton, August 1998

"‘You Don’t Care About Us’ is directed towards me, written from the point of view of someone who I used to be in a relationship with. There’s a line in it which says, ‘You’re in the wrong place/ You’re in the back page’ which is often what I used to do - I used to imagine the end of these things just as they were starting. When you do that you’re fucked from day one basically, but that’s often the way I used to conduct my relationships. I think I’m quite a misunderstood songwriter - all the bile and vitriol and wickedness people believe is directed by me towards other people, but they’re often directed from other people towards me and I’m being extremely self critical. “

Brian Molko, NME, August 1998

Charlie Craine : Many of the songs deal with sexuality and they seem to have different gender points of view. Is it just me or are these songs written like that?

Stefan : Definitely. That is the way Brian writes his lyrics sometimes. Like the song "You Don't Care About Us". That is taken from the point of view of somebody talking to Brian. As opposed to him talking to somebody else, actually somebody is asking him, 'This relationship is going wrong. You don't care about us, man.' (laughs) But other people translate it like the kids are going to the adults, 'You don't care about us!' It's weird. They are all coming from all different angles. "My Sweet Prince" was a female friend of Brian's who just they were just kind of busting up and that was the last thing she wrote on his mirror in his bathroom before they split up. It is all real, but it can be from any direction really.

Stefan Olsdal, Hip Online, May 17, 1999
