Lyrics and explanation

Without You I'm Nothing - Placebo

Lyrics : Placebo
Without You I'm Nothing
Strange infatuation
Seems to grace the evening tide.
I'll take it by your side.
Such imagination
Seems to help the feeling slide.
I'll take it by your side.
Instant correlation sucks
And breeds a pack of lies.
I'll take it by your side.
Oversaturation curls the skin
And tans the hide.
I'll take it by your side.

Tick - tock (x3)
Tick - tick - tick - tick -tick - tock

I'm unclean, a libertine
And every time
You vent your spleen,
I seem to lose
The power of speech,
You're slipping slowly from my reach.
You grow me like
An evergreen,
You've never seen the lonely me at all.

Take the plan, spin it sideways.

Without you, I'm nothing.
Without you, I'm nothing.
Without you, I'm nothing.

Take the plan, spin it sideways.
Without you, I'm nothing at all.
Press Quotes

(Translation, quote in French

Stefan explains David Bowie's desire to work with them : "it was very strange, one day he called and said "Hey guys, I love what you do and especially 'Without You I'm Nothing', I would be pleased to record it with you or cover it. What do you think ?" We said : "Ok, we will meet and see what we can do (laughs)!" And then you know, there was a sort of unease... It's Bowie and he conducts and wants to control everything... And then, finally he came to the studio and there he went to sing... how to say that ? We were there behind the window : "Fuck that's Bowie!" It was magical! I can't say it was a dream come true because I never think about it, but after the fact, I must admit it was one of the most thrilling and unforgettable time of my life."

Stefan Olsdal, Rock Sound n°72, September 1999

(Translation, quote in French

"Without You I'm nothing..., the song almost became an hymn...
BM :
That's funny. I will tell you a story : at Reading Festival, you've heard about it ? Last year, two people got married on the Reading scene before the first band at eleven A.M, on Without You I'm Nothing. We laughed, we couln't believe it. I always thought there was a deep irony : I imagine that perhaps many couples make love on this song and My Sweet Prince, and this two songs talk about relationships that are falling apart : I find that deeply ironic. Very depressive songs but that people sing as love proof."

Why re-recording it with David Bowie ?
BM: We didn't re-recorded it. He came, put his voice, and we remixed. In fact we were going to do a song with David for the Brits Award. The tradition is to do classic English songs covers. As we have done "
20th Century Boy" for the Velvet Goldmine film, I suggested to David to do it for the Brits. He said ok. Then he called me to say: "we should do Without You, it's my favorite" I answered back: "I don't think the Brits will like that..." We asked them and they said : "we prefer "20th Century Boy". So with David, we decided to make it a single : he had already wrote his harmony, he really wanted to be on that song. It's a great Honour."

Brian Molko, Guitar Part, November 2000

"About his (Brian) favourite songs . . .
There are many.
Pure Morning obviously which represented a very important change for us. Without You I'm Nothing and Special Needs too, I wouldn’t change them even after much time."

Brian Molko, All Music, November 2004
