Lyrics : Placebo
This Picture
I hold an image of the ashtray girl
Of cigarette burns on my chest
I wrote a poem
That described her world
And put our friendship to the test
And late at night
Whilst on all fours
She used to watch me kiss the floor
What's wrong with this picture ?

Farewell the ashtray girl
Forbidden snowflake
Beware this troubled world
Watch out for earthquakes
Goodbye to open sores
To broken semaphore
You know we miss her
We miss her picture

Sometimes it's fated
(We) disintegrate it
For fear of growing old
Sometimes it's fated
(We) assassinate it
For fear of growing old

Farwell the ashtray girl
Angelic fruitcake
Beware this troubled world
Control your intake
Goodbye to open sores
Goodbye and furthermore
I know we miss her
We miss her picture

Hang on
Though we try
It's gone

I can't stop growing old
Press Quotes

(Translation, quote in French
here)

"Outwardly, This Picture is crammed with basic SM imaging, but behind the metaphor, it denounces the self-destructive love relationships. It was a way to say that this state of mind doesn't interest me anymore. I've been damaged enough in such relationships in the past and now I've got nothing more to do there. I changed, I quit."

Brian Molko, Les Inrockuptibles N°382 : March-April 2003

Brian: Someone walking away from a self-destructive relationship. It recalls James Dean’s fetish of having cigarettes stubbed out on his chest during sex, only here they’re being stubbed out on mine.

Brian Molko, interview, Rock Sound, April 2003

About "ashtray girl" :

"That's about an old legend about James Dean."

Brian Molko, BBC questions de fans Chat 2003

(Translation, quote in French here)

Brian : This Picture was originally a piano ballad, a REM track style. We made rock out of it, a rock song. It's especially about destructive relationships."

Brian Molko, M6 Music, March 2004
