Lyrics and explanation

The Queen Is Dead

Lyrics Morissey
Bigmouth Strikes Again

Sweetness
Sweetness I was only joking when I said
I'd like to smash every tooth in your head.
Oh sweetness
Sweetness I was only joking when I said
By rights you should be bludgeoned in your bed.

And now I know how joan of arc felt
Now I know how joan of arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her discman started to melt

Bigmouth la da dum da da
Bigmouth la da da da,
Bigmouth strikes again
And I've got no right to take my place
In the human race
Oh
Bigmouth la da dum da da
Bigmouth la da da da
Bigmouth strikes again
And I've got no right to take my place
In the human race

And now I know how joan of arc felt
Now I know how joan of arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her megadrive started to melt

Bigmouth la da dum da da
Bigmouth la da da da
Bigmouth strikes again
And I've got no right to take my place
In the human race
Oh
Bigmouth la da dum da da
Bigmouth la da da da
Bigmouth strikes again
And I've got no right to take my place
In the human race.
Press Quotes

"A few years ago Placebo covered Bigmouth Strikes Again on the Smiths’ tribute album, ‘The Queen Is Dead’ put together by French magazine Les Inrockuptibles. Stefan seems a little surprised to have it mentioned:
Stefan : "Oh, are you a Smiths fan? Same here. We were quite surprised, when we were asked, that no-one had chosen Bigmouth Strikes Again because I think it’s the strongest track on the album. Maybe people are a bit afraid to tackle such a number but we just drove straight in there. We tried to make it fiercer and bring it up to date."

It was a rather brave move to record one of the definitive Smiths tracks.

Stefan : "Well, in some ways we don’t think too much about things like that."

Stefan Olsdal, db Magazine, February 24th 1999

"When we got the offer from France, wer were surprised that no one had taken 'Bigmouth Strikes Again', so we decided that people must have been scared. We took the challenge because it's such a vitriolic song, we just tried to up the ante sonically to match. We wanted to balance the hatefulness lyrically with hatefulness, sonically. I think the Supergrass one is about the only other good one on there. The rest of it is pretty dire. Bis did 'The Boy With The Thorn In His Side' which is just atrocious."

Brian Molko, Living Abroad Magazine, March 02nd 1999
