Lyrics and explanation

Meds 2006 - Placebo

Lyrics : Placebo
Space Monkey
Space monkey in the place to be,
Riding in a rocket to a planet of sound
Shooting the moon, playing dominoes in drag,
An increase in population of a hundred percent.

Space monkey in the place to be,
With a chemical peel and a picture of Mary,
Out on a limb in the carnival of me,
Raising the temperature one hundred degrees.

We're sown together,
She's born to mesmer,
Beside astride her,
I die inside her,

Space monkey in the place to be,
A mass of contradictions in a golden frame,
Raising the roof in a calamity way,
Completely meretricious of a poke in the eye.

Space monkey in the place to be,
Talk of the town, with a Colombian rock,
Out on a limb in the carnival of me,
Raising the temperature one hundred degrees.

We're sown together,
She's born to mesmer,
Beside astride her,
I die inside her,
It's far too sacred, don't ever fake it,
And don't, and don't, and don't
Let me down,

Like you let me down before, (x2)

Space monkey in the place to be,
With some free-association and a hole in her head ,
Out on a limb in the carnival of me,
Raising the temperature one hundred degrees.

We're sown together,
She's born to mesmer,
Beside astride her,
I die inside her,
It's far too sacred, don't ever fake it,
And don't, and don't, and
Don't let me down,

Like you let me down before, (x4)
Press Quotes
(Translation, quote in French here)

"Brian : Steve? I know how you feel about this one ...

Steve : It's a modern classic. (Laughter) Space Monkey was one of the first things that we wrote at the start of Sleeping With Ghosts. We had decided to drop guitars, to become Kraftwerk. We had an electronic drumkit and keyboards.

Brian : On Sleeping With Ghosts, we wanted to drop guitars. On this one, it's the opposite: we bugger Kraftwerk and we get back to rock.

Steve : So, we had been working for 3 days and the 4th, the management turns up and says "So what have you got?" So, we explain that we've just started, that we're still at the anything stage and that they had come too early. They ask us to play something anyway. We played Space Monkey for them. At that point, they ask us what the fuck we were doing. We aswered that in any case, they had nothing to do there so early.

Brian : In London, Dimitri turned up to the sessions on bicycle. Once we took it, we put it into the studio with a garbage can, the foot of a keyboard and metal pieces. And Steve played on it for 3 hours. In the end, we had our Space Monkey. This guy is no longer a drummer, he is a cyclist! Afterwards we added a real orchestra. They came to the studio, they played, we filmed them."

Bionic : What were you thinking about when you wrote Space Monkey? What was the inspiration for writing it?

Stefan: Space Monkey is a mystery to us! We don't really know how it turned out the way it did. We started to write it around Sleeping With Ghosts and over the years it changed form. We used instruments we hadn't used before and tuned the guitars to new tunings.

Radio interview XFM
‘Space Monkey’ [listen]
“This track was a real journey of discovery and felt like it just dropped out of the sky one day.”

Brian Molko, XFM, March 2006

MS : Is there a song on this album that you say to yourself, "We wouldn't have done this song ten years ago?"

SH : "Space Monkey."

MS : Good choice because it's a big epic, clash of different ideas and sounds.

SH : It was knocking around since Sleeping With Ghosts. We just couldn't find the right tone for it. For some reason, in the Meds session it became a big, weird anthem. When you look at it, it doesn't seem like a typical song from us.
