Lyrics and explanation

Meds 2006 - Placebo

Lyrics : Placebo
Pierrot the Clown
Leave me dreaming on the bed,
See you right back here tomorrow,
For the next round,
Keep this scene inside your head,
As the bruises turn to yellow,
The swelling goes down,

And if you're ever around,
In the city or the suburbs
Of this town,
Be sure to come around,
I'll be wallowing in sorrow,
Wearing a frown,
Like Pierrot the clown

Saw you crashing round the bay,
Never seen you act so shallow,
Or look so brown,
Remember all the things you'd say,
How your promises rang hollow,
As you threw me to the ground.

And if you're ever around,
In the backstreets or the alleys,
Of this town,
Be sure to come around,
I'll be wallowing in pity,
Wearing a frown,
Like Pierrot the clown.

When I dream, I dream your lips,
When I dream, I dream your kiss,
When I dream, I dream your fists,
your fists, your fists.

Leave me bleeding in the bed,
See you right back here tomorrow,
For the next round,
Keep this scene inside your head,
As the bruises turn to yellow,
The swelling goes down.

And if you're ever around,
In the city or the suburbs
Of this town,
Be sure to come around,
I'll be wallowing in sorrow,
Wearing a frown,
Like Pierrot the clown,

Like Pierrot the clown, (x4)
Press Quotes
(Translation, quote in French here)

"Brian : It's about destructive, violent relationships. After having written it, I realized that it might be a family relationship as well as a love one. A lot of songs - mostly country - talk about women beeing hit by their husbands. On the contrary, in Pierrot the clown, the target of the violence is a man. A vulnerable man, trapped in a violent and destructive relationship. The title of this track reflects my obsession with clowns and my passion for the circus. In high school, I even thought about getting into a school for clowns and become a ...

Stefan : (teasing) That's what you do !

Brian : (Laughter) But fortunately for everyone, I was accepted at university! When I was a kid, I would go to the circus. It was a celebration, but a person, Pierrot, was always sad. I felt compassion for him. Pierrot the Clown, it's also the role played by David Bowie in his video Ashes To Ashes. It's a powerful image for me, with which I wanted to express how you can feel alone in a couple, how much you can let yourself being beaten physically and mentally by someone. Very cheerful, huh? "

Radio interview XFM
‘Pierrot The Clown’ [listen]
“About seeing someone who you once had a relationship with and remembering why you were first attracted to them.”

Brian Molko, XFM, March 2006

MS : I really enjoyed the songwriting on "Pierrot The Clown." Is there a history behind that song?

SH : That track has been kicking around for a few years. It's basically about a broken love affair that drags for years. One person is reaching for the stars while the other is doing smack in a back alley. It is a beautiful song, so it lent itself to be more of a ballad with a subtle drum machine.

My interpretation was the song was a personification of heroine and that the needle left him bleeding or with bruises. Despite this, due to addiction, he'd see him(heroine) again tomorrow. Whenever 'he's' around, in the backstreets or the alleys he hopes 'he'll' come around. The sadness he felt i assumed to be withdrawal. The reason for my interpretation was due to the artists numerous other allusions to the drug in other songs. I believe the different interpretations of the song as well as that people bother to try to find out what he meant speaks to the great songwriting ability and talent of "Placebo"
