Song To Say Goodbye
Lyrics and explanation

Song To Say Goodbye - Placebo

Lyrics : Placebo
Song To Say Goodbye
You are one of Gods mistakes
You crying, tragic waste of skin
I'm well aware of how it aches
And you still won't let me in
Now I'm breaking down your door
To try and save your swollen face
Though I don't like you anymore
You lying, trying waste of space

Before our innocence was lost
You were always one of those
Blessed with lucky sevens
And a voice that made me cry
My oh my

You were Mother Nature's son
Someone to whom I could relate
Your needle and your damage done
Remains a sordid twist of fate
Now I'm trying to wake you up
To pull you from the liquid sky
'Cause if I don't we'll both end up
With just your songs to say goodbye

My oh my

A song to say goodbye (x2)
A song to say

Before our innocence was lost
You were always one of those
Blessed with lucky sevens
And a voice that made me cry.
It's a song to say goodbye (x8)
Press Quotes
(Translation, quote in French here)

"The theme of Song To Say Goodbye is keeping only the best aspects of your life. It's the first track I wrote in India. I went there for a lot of reasons, one of them being to try and change my lifestyle. I wanted to make me understand that I should not become a rock'n'roll cliché and that the world doesn't need another dead rock star. I've written it as a letter to myself."

Brian Molko, Rock Mag April 2006

(Translation, quote in French here)

"A Song To Say Goodbye ", the first single from the album, was written for someone in particular? You, Brian, perhaps?

BM : Yes, it's like a letter I would adress to me. I went to India last year, I was there during the tsunami ... There was no damage, like there was in Sri Lanka or in Madras. I took my guitar with me to make it mine again as a friend. Over time, the guitar became an instrument of work. A job, so to speak. Before being in a band, it was a friend and ... Well I was trying to have an honest conversation with myself. I wanted to make myself understand that the world doesn't need another dead rock star ...

At this point?

BM: (concerned look then powerless little smile)...Yes...

You also pay tribute to the Neil Young's song "The Needle and The Damage Done".

BM : Yes, right. We were in Brazil in March and we learned that the last time Neil Young had played "Rock in Rio", he wore a Placebo T-shirt (big smile).

Are you going through a phase of redemption, as Dave Gahan or Bowie, for example?

BM : You know, writing songs is a way to talk to yourself. You tell yourself things you would not tell yourself in everyday life; it's such a chance to have this form of expression. It provides a way to understand a bit more his life. It's constructive and positive.
